ROUND 2 RECAP: UK’S LEWIS CORNISH WINS AGAIN IN ASIA

United Kingdom’s Lewis Cornish stole the show again in the FIM Asia Supermoto Championship, with a win in Moto 1 and Moto 2 in Kota Surakarta, Indonesia.

Both races resulted in the same top 5, showing who’s on form in the Championship:

  1. LEWIS CORNISH (UK)
  2. KHAIRI ZAKARIA (Malaysia)
  3. TRAKARN THANGTHONG (Thailand)
  4. MUHD HABIBULLAH (Malaysia)
  5. TAKASHI SASAKI (Japan)

It was a tight Round mainly fought between two riders: UK’s Lewis Cornish and Malaysia’s Khairi Zakaria. Zakaria was on Cornish’s wheel until the end, but the British rider’s pace was too much and his class showed through to earn him a 7-second lead by the final lap.

“I was exhausted after Moto 1,” said Zakaria. “I was struggling due to the weather conditions. I have never felt anything like this before, especially riding for more than 20 laps in a race. I endured the first five laps to close the gap between Lewis and distant myself from Trakarn. If that did not happen, I might not be in the second position at the moment.”

After the race, Cornish spoke on his victory: “I was a little tired and stressed in the first few laps. Five minutes into the race, I found my groove and started putting in some fast laps to build the gap between Khairi and me. From there, I just controlled the race.”

Meanwhile, Thailand’s Trakarn Thangthong was merely a second behind the Malaysian rider despite suffering a 15-second jump-start penalty in Moto 2.

“It was a tough race because the weather was scorching and there were too many riders on this tight track. I made many minor mistakes in almost every corner,” said Thangthong.

While the trio continued to lead the pack, 2016 Champion Muhd Habibullah was faced with a different challenge and contender. Japan’s Takashi Sasaki tailed the Malaysian until the end of the race, with a tight gap that makes no room for mistakes for Habibullah.

With Round 2 complete, it looks like Lewis Cornish is on track to be 2017 FIM Asia Supermoto Champion. Can anyone beat him?
